Disney shuts down LucasArts, will license 'Star Wars' brand to other developers

After purchasing Lucasfilm last October, Disney has decided to shut down the company's videogame development arm, LucasArts. In a statement released to GameInformer, Disney says that it's "decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games." As part of the decision, the company will be laying off an unspecified number of employees across the company.


The shutdown doesn't come as a surprise to the industry. Beyond the state of LucasArts in recent years, which saw titles like Battlefront III canceled mid-development, Disney hinted it would be moving away from home console games when it first made the Lucasfilm...
