Why 'Saturday Night Live' still matters: a conversation with Taran Killam


Now in its 39th season, Saturday Night Live isn't just a variety show — it's a television mainstay, up there with cultural pillars like 60 Minutes and Monday Night Football. Under the stewardship of creator Lorne Michaels, it has steadily brought on new cast members while shedding those that came before, all of which makes this year's "transitional" season such an exception. This year was no different: having lost three well-known performers in Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Jason Sudeikis, the show has brought in six new cast members while asking existing staffers to step to the forefront.
