Ansel Adams said, “you don’t take a photograph, you make it.” And while that’s true for anyone that steps behind the lens, Gregory Crewdson is pushing Adams’s dictum to incredible heights. The artist creates haunting, surreal images of American life with the scale and attention of a Hollywood set, and a new film called Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters takes the viewer behind his process — from how Crewdson conceives of the images, to the painstaking lengths he goes to in order to bring his visions to life. Head over to Strobist for a little more background on the film, and be sure to check out the list of screenings on the Brief Encounters site in order to find out how you can catch it in your town.
