
BMW's new Project I cars are expected to go into production next year, but the company's history with electric vehicles dates back much further than many may realize. Wired has taken a look back at 40 years of electric-powered BMW cars, from the 1972 BMW 1602 — which could only go 20 miles on a single charge of its 772 pound battery — to the BMW Active E, an electric version of the 2010 1 Series coupe that was only available through leasing.
