Police call on Congress to require that carriers maintain SMS logs for two years

Law enforcement representatives have asked Congress to require that all US cellular carriers store text message records for a minimum of two years, according to a report from Cnet . As lawmakers consider amending the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the Major Cities Chiefs Police Association and other enforcement groups are pushing for legislation addressing SMS log preservation. Text conversations often contain evidence vital to investigations, police maintain, and current policies among US providers are said to be inadequate — for those companies that bother to record logs in the first place.
