Google finally has a true Office competitor for mobile


At Google’s I/O developer conference today, the company is unveiling some significant changes to its Docs and Sheets mobile apps. QuickOffice, the productivity suite Google acquired in 2012, is now built into Docs and Sheets, providing the ability to natively edit Microsoft Office files. That’s a big deal for office workers who regularly rely on Microsoft’s document formats, and it removes the friction of having to convert Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files for use in Google Docs.


Google is also bringing its presentation software, Slides, to mobile. It will be available today on Android today and iOS soon. Like Docs and Sheets, it’s a standalone app that’s separate to the main Google Drive application, and will also natively support...
