Prehistoric Egyptian jewelry made from a meteorite, say researchers

Egyptian_iron_meteorite_large

Researchers have discovered than an ancient Egyptian bead was made out of iron taken from a meteorite. In a paper published in Meteoritics & Planetary Science, they write that the piece of jewelry dates back to roughly 3,300 BC. It was one of nine such artifacts found in 1911 — at a cemetery roughly 70 kilometers south of Cairo — and its origin has been a point of contention for some time. Its very existence seemed to contradict the known record of iron smelting in the region, which hasn't been seen until thousands of years later during the sixth century BC. A meteorite would have made sense as an alternate origin — and analysis in 1928 revealed that the iron in the beads had a high amount of nickel, a finding consistent with...

A look at the patent on distributing podcasts, and EFF's plan to fight it

Dscf1271_large

Much of the public awareness and outrage surrounding patent trolls began a few years back when Lodsys started targeting small iOS developers for royalties on in-app purchasing technology. We've since seen similar patent licensing entities go after companies and individuals for infringement of Wi-Fi technologies and network scanner products, to name just a couple. Now a legal battle is forming around the popular activity of podcasting, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation is stepping in to help fight it.

In particular, Personal Audio — another company that seems to only generate revenue from the licensing of its patents — has begun throwing around US patent 8,112,504. The way Personal Audio sees it, '504 is "a fundamental patent...

Google won't approve facial recognition Glass apps until it has 'privacy protections in place'

Google-glass-hands-on-stock5_2040_large

In a post on Google+ today, Google said that it does not intend on approving any apps with facial recognition features — though it hasn't closed the door the possibility in the future. In the post, Google said "many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass. ... We won’t add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place." Google also stressed that this is not an especially new policy, and indeed two weeks ago Steve Lee, director of product management for Google Glass, made a statement along similar lines: "We’ve consistently said that we won’t add new face recognition features to our services unless we have strong privacy...

Journal site Xanga tries to fend off an impending shutdown with fundraising drive

4535149749_be020bee00_z_large

It's a sad day for the old internet. Xanga — which has long tagged behind LiveJournal as a journaling platform — is running out of time: in a blog post, the team behind it said they'll be forced to shut the site down if they can't raise $60,000 by July 15th. "The status quo is no longer possible," says the team, revealing that the "expensive" lease on its network facility is almost up. And while the team could try to revamp the site or sell to a larger platform, they're realistic about their prospects. "The thing is, it's really hard to grow a social site that has fallen from previous heights. MySpace, Friendster, LiveJournal... lots of people have tried to resurrect these sites, and it has rarely, if ever, worked."

Illegal genetically modified wheat appeared in Oregon, and no one's sure how it got there

5897572079_f560e2cbdf_z_large

A mystery is unfolding in the laboratories and grain fields of Oregon. Stalks of wheat that hadn't been planted and wouldn't die were found growing among a farmer's crops. Tests have revealed that the peculiar wheat included an illegal gene modification that made it resistant to a certain herbicide — something that shouldn't have existed within a commercial US grain field. Now the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is trying to figure out how it got there and who it came from.

Early lab results show that the grain is a match for a strain that Monsanto tested between 1998 and 2005, but how it got there remains unclear. Both Monsanto and the USDA say that the wheat is safe for growth and consumption, despite its ban in...

Acidifying oceans could spell squid doomsday

Amt23_d5_1_g12_large

Earth's oceans are growing increasingly acidic, and the phenomenon is expected to produce both environmental and economic problems over the next century, according to a new study. At the center of all this is a key player in the oceanic food chain — the squid. As the acidity of seawater rises, squid will have a harder time growing and developing, according to a study from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Such stunted growth would dramatically impact their crucial role as both predator and prey to other underwater life, and in the process be a detriment to the fishing and food industries.

DirecTV reportedly among three bidders offering at least $1 billion for Hulu

Hulu_plus__1_of_1__large

It's difficult to say how close Hulu is to being sold off to a new owner, but the bidding war is ramping up once again. Bloomberg reports that DirecTV and two other prospective buyers are each offering $1 billion or more for the video streaming service. Hulu’s board is said to be considering at least seven acquisition offers and aims to pursue talks with "three or four" of the most serious candidates over the next several weeks, the report says. Other than the satellite provider, Bloomberg doesn't specify which other interested parties are bidding that high. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Yahoo has bid between $600 million and $800M to add Hulu to its growing list of acquisitions.

You'll explore a labyrinth temple full of secrets, treasures, puzzles, and of course snakes, and you might even stumble across a famous adventurer along the way. The actual gameplay is standard adventure game style: you'll need to explore, collect items, and then figure out where to use those items to open up new areas to explore. The puzzles generally aren't too tough, but there's a handy walkthrough in case you do get stuck. Best of all, The Queen of Snakes is free and playable in your browser — check it...

Nexus movement: what smartwatches can learn from Seiko

Dscf0517_large

A dual-language day and date window, a sweeping second hand, a crown at the 3-o’clock position. Starting from a small handful of common characteristics, a company like Swatch, Seiko, Breitling, or Bell & Ross can produce literally dozens of models of wristwatches, each as unique as its owner. Dials and hands change; one model might be 18-karat gold while another is stainless steel. But underneath, they’re all powered by an identical movement — a set of miniature gears, springs, and counterweights that keeps time. Considering how complex these marvels of the industrial age can be, it’s no wonder that a watchmaker would want to reuse them as liberally as possible.

Modular design is a principle that any reasonable...

Were truckloads of 'E.T.' Atari cartridges buried in New Mexico? A film crew is about to find out

Et2600screen_large

Decades ago, Atari produced a legendarily awful video game based on E.T.: The Extraterrestrial. According to reports from the time, the game was such a flop that Atari was left with millions of unsold and unsellable copies, marking a fatal turning point in both the company's fortunes and the larger industry. Unable to get rid of the games, Atari allegedly dumped truckloads of them in a New Mexico landfill, covering them in cement and leaving them for the ages to destroy. But although The New York Times and others described some kind of Atari disposal effort in 1983, the E.T. burial has reached the status of an urban legend in the gaming community — one that Snopes considers true and the developer suspects is false. Now, according to...

North America's first offshore wind turbine deployed in Maine

Volturnus-offshore-wind_large

The number of wind power installations connected to the electrical grid in the US has exploded in recent years, driven in part by government tax credits for renewables, but all of them have been confined to land so far. That changed today, when North America's first-ever offshore wind turbine, the VolturnUS (pronounced as one word, "vol-tern-us"), was installed on a floating platform off the shore of the Penobscot River in Brewer, Maine. In the coming days, the turbine is set to be towed across the river to a site further out into the waters of the Atlantic, where it will be plugged into the electrical grid through an undersea cable. By Tuesday, it will spin to life, becoming the first operational machine of its kind on the continent.

Camino browser ends development after ten years

33333_large

The open source web browser Camino is no longer in development, after landing on Macs about a decade ago. Camino's developers felt that it had fallen behind modern browsers like Chrome and Firefox, and that continuing to slowly develop the browser would lead to serious security issues for its users. Though Camino's marketshare hasn't been significant in some time, it originally served as one of the limited options that Mac users had for surfing the web. At first, Camino was one of the few browsers that embraced OS X's aesthetics and services, but over the years its development slowed. While the announcement that Camino's development is over was only made yesterday, the browser's final update was back in March of last year.

Cracking Kinect: the Xbox One's new sensor could be a hardware hacker's dream

Dsc_4492-hero-875_large

One of the biggest upgrades to Microsoft's recently unveiled Xbox One console is the new and improved Kinect: The device now features a higher fidelity sensor, a larger field of view compared to the original, and better skeletal tracking. This could have some potentially cool applications when it comes to watching TV on your console or playing games, but, like the original Kinect, the most exciting new ideas will likely come from outside of Microsoft and traditional game developers. The hackability of the original Kinect created a healthy DIY movement, and while it's too early to tell if the new version will do the same, there's definitely plenty of possibility — especially with the recently announced Kinect for Windows launching...

Not carrying three phones, lenses, and battery packs may put me in the minority at Verge HQ, but my shoulders are probably a lot better off for it. Microsoft launches iPad comparison site for Windows 8 tablets

Dsc_1123-875_large

Microsoft is launching the second phase of its advertising against Apple's iPad this week. Following an iPad mini commercial parody, a new site aims to convince consumers that Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets are worth buying over the iPad. Microsoft has picked the Asus VivoTab Smart, Dell XPS 10, HP Envy x2, and its Surface RT to compare against a 32GB and 64GB iPads.

Most of the comparisons are valid and fair — including battery life, weight, and display size — but Microsoft appears to be singling out Office apps as a benefit without noting Apple's alternative. The software maker notes that the iPad can only run OneNote, but there's no mention that it's up to Microsoft to offer Office apps on iOS. The charts include many of the...

Acer Aspire R7 review

I think I'm going blind. I've never had glasses, and always kind of liked being the guy with perfect vision, but I'm pretty sure I'm going blind. Ten times a day I catch myself craning my neck toward my laptop screen because a website's text is too small, and is that an I or an L? It's worrisome.

But for the last couple of weeks, instead of leaning in toward my laptop I just brought my laptop to me. I've been using the Acer Aspire R7, the Windows 8 laptop that has a "floating touchscreen" that can be twisted, spun, flipped, and moved every which way. It's quirky, and weird, and in more ways than one looks like nothing I've ever seen. It's been fantastic for my neck over the last couple of weeks, but is it a great machine? Acer's...

Ecstasy for my eardrums: tripping through the addictive psychedelia of million-dollar hi-fi

Yesterday I chronicled a skeptical vision quest through the realm of high-end audio appreciation. It brought me to one of the darkest corners of the High End hi-fi trade show in Munich. I found myself in a room surrounded by silver-haired purists in front of a bespoke rig by Pioneer subsidiary TAD Labs.

I took a seat near the back in the dimly lit room, trying not to make any errant noises that might distract fellow attendees from their current task: enjoying extremely high-resolution playbacks of ABBA jazz covers. This version of “Money Money Money” had been captured at Benny Andersson’s own Mono Music Studio in Stockholm using the same Evolution One speakers we were now hearing as studio monitors. Google must obey FBI's warrantless requests for user data for now, judge rules

Google's attempts to fight FBI National Security Letters, controversial requests to hand over user data without telling them and without getting a search warrant, aren't going so well. A US District Court Judge in California recently rejected Google's petition to have 19 letters requesting user information thrown out or adjusted, CNET reports. However, there is a silver lining for Google and its users: the federal judge in the case, Susan Illston, also left the door open for Google to file a more narrowly-tailored petition addressing the specific letters it had received, rather than its initial arguments against NSLs more generally.

The long, strange life of the 'Star Wars' logo

35a1h_large

The Star Wars logo is so familiar as to be almost invisible today, but as graphic designer Alex Jay explains, it passed through a half-dozen hands before reaching its current state. Jay tracks the design through comic books, mass-market paperbacks, movie posters, and concept art, all the way back to a pre-production decal to stick on film cans. "George [Lucas] had had one for American Graffiti, and wanted one for Star Wars," said artist Ralph McQuarrie, referencing the logo partially shown above. "This was how we first pictured Han Solo ... George decided that Han Solo should be a more relaxed character, and his costume was changed. But this decal was designed before the change."

‘People want to be amazed’: the man behind the magic of ‘Now You See Me’

David Kwong got his first taste of magic as a young boy in upstate New York. The trick was simple: the magician placed a red sponge ball into the boy’s hand, produced a second one, and then made it vanish. When Kwong opened his hand, there were two balls resting inside.

“I remember turning to my father and saying ‘How did this work?,’” he tells me over coffee in Los Angeles. “And he just gave me that patented sheepish grin and said ‘I have no idea.’”

“And that’s when I knew I had to learn magic.”

Did Apple conspire to fix ebook prices? The DOJ takes Cupertino to court on Monday

Iphone5_0622_large

Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services

Propelled by the public's embrace of the Kindle, Amazon was running away with the burgeoning ebook market by the end of 2009. The steep discounts it offered, which were often below wholesale cost, were also a big part of why the company could boast more than 90 percent market share.

To the chagrin of competitors and book publishers, Amazon was developing monopoly control of the ebook market. The retailer could offer the total package: the top e-reader, the most popular online book store, and the best prices. Amazon's strategy was also a proven winner. It was nearly identical to the one Apple employed earlier in the decade with the iPod and iTunes store when it...

Bot searches Google Maps to uncover hidden faces around the world

While others search for life on distant planets, one company is using satellite imagery to identify human features back on earth. German design specialist Onformative has created a new project called Google Faces that uses specialized facial recognition algorithms and Google Maps to circumnavigate the globe and detect hidden faces in natural landscapes.

Onformative's intention is to explore the psychological experience of Pareidolia — the phenomenon that helps us see Elvis in a piece of toast or pick out satanic messages from a Beatles track when it is played backwards. The company has seen early success (like in the image above), but will continue to send its Facetracker software around the world to focus on the varying zoom levels...

Architects propose radical new designs for New York's Penn Station

A number of design firms have drawn up plans for new a Penn Station and Madison Square Garden as part of campaign to rebuild the complex. Renowned studios SHoP Architects, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and others were all asked to re-imagine the New York landmarks by the Municipal Art Society (MAS), a non-profit that campaigns for, among other things, intelligent urban design and planning.

The most radical proposals came from Diller Sofidio + Renfro and SOM, who both submitted wildly complex designs. Diller Scofido + Renfro's "Penn Station 3.0" aims to serve "commuters, office workers, fabricators, shoppers, foodies, culture seekers, and urban explorers," with a multi-level complex that's topped by a...

The rise and fall of the 'Star Wars theater'

960x595_large

Before the release of Star Wars in March 1977, Lucasfilm wasn't sure if the film would be a success. The studio restricted its opening to just 37 theaters across the whole of the US, including the Coronet in San Francisco, which was the only screen showing the movie for 50 miles. While Lucasfilm's initial plans were limited, the film had captured the public's imagination even before its release. When the film opened, the Coronet's 1,350 seats were filled for every showing — ensuring that over the next few decades it became known as "the Star Wars' theater." Despite its huge screen, modern sound system, and cult appeal, the theater closed in March 2005 and was demolished two years later. Paying tribute to Star Wars opening weekend at...

Photographs capture the moment atoms bond for the first time

Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have captured the moment when atoms form a covalent bond. The team happened upon the discovery by accident: they set out to build graphene nanostructures, and used an atomic force microscope to ensure they had correctly arranged the atoms. Much to their surprise, the microscope captured some stunning images of carbon atoms and their bonds.

"We weren't thinking about making beautiful images... but to really see what was happening at the single-atom level we had to use a uniquely sensitive atomic force microscope," explains Felix Fischer, a scientist who worked on the project. "Nobody has ever taken direct, single-bond-resolved images of individual...

This week, Shively announced plans to create the first national brand of retail marijuana for both medical and recreational users. As Reuters reports, Shively has already acquired a Washington-based company that operates two Seattle medical marijuana dispensaries, and is close to purchasing others in California and Colorado. He's also calling for the US government to legalize weed trade with Mexico, underscoring the bold (and perhaps unrealistic) scope of his vision.

Microscopic laser-molded bunny could help fight brain disorders

Omex_-_microbunny_-_fig2_large

Japanese researchers have demonstrated a new type of resin that could be used in 3D micro-electrodes that interface with the brain. With the material, it's possible to micro-sculpt tiny objects that hold their shape after being "carbonized" at 800 degrees Celsius, which increases electrical conductivity; the process reduces models made with other available resins to a charred, shapeless blob.

The image above shows how the resin was used to reproduce the "Stanford bunny," a common test blueprint for 3D modeling and printing. Though the model on the right, seen after undergoing the carbonizing process, shrank by around 20 percent, it held its shape and integrity well. This allows for the creation of complex structures just a few...

The right stuff: inside the race to be the first American in space

Mercury7astros_large

Private companies trying to shuttle tourists into space. Audacious plans to send civilians on a one-way mission to Mars. Astronauts recording David Bowie cover songs from 230 miles above the Earth. Nope, space travel isn't what it used to be.

More than 50 years ago, a select cadre of American test pilots underwent rigorous NASA testing, each of them making a bid to become the first US astronaut in space. The men, known as "The Mercury Seven," were chosen specifically because of their professional background: they had security clearance, familiarity with aircraft, and military experience that offered discipline and an ability to follow orders.

These men may have met that criteria, but plenty more awaited them as they auditioned to...

Moon discovered around asteroid that's due to fly by Earth tomorrow

Asteroid-1998-qe2-moon_large

An asteroid the size of the Golden Gate Bridge (about 1.7 miles wide) is due to fly near the Earth tomorrow, that much scientists have known for a while. But what they did not know was that the asteroid, named 1998 QE2, would be bringing along a friend. New radar imagery of the asteroid's approach taken by NASA scientists using an antennae in Goldstone, California, has revealed that the asteroid contains a tiny moon of its own, approximately 2,000 feet wide. Check out the asteroid and its moon in a video released today by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory:

Razer Blade shrinks down to size, beefy new 14-inch model starts at $1,799

2013-05-30_02-39-33-1020_large

Razer has introduced two new versions of its Blade gaming laptop, including a 14-inch version of its high-end gaming laptop. The 17-inch Razer Blade Pro uses Intel's fourth-generation 47W Haswell processor, along with an Nvidia GeForce GTX765M graphics card, promising the combination will offer up to twice the performance. Just like the last generation of Blade, it's still 0.88 inches thick, and it includes the Switchblade UI, programmable keyboard, and Dolby speaker software, though we found the actual speakers on the last-generation Blade pretty weak. Razer justifies the "Pro" in the name by including a number of professional design apps with the Switchblade UI, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Maya, and GIMP (which is in...

Can we breed the farts out of cows?

Cows_rdax_800x535_large

Cows, goats, deer, and sheep naturally produce an abundance of methane — one of the more powerful greenhouse gases — but researchers are hoping that they can all but bring an end to that with selective breeding. Preliminary findings suggest it can be done, according to a team of researchers from over a half-dozen countries. The team found that methane production, which occurs through belching and flatulation, was consistent in each animal — gassy cows were always gassy, for instance. This should allow the team to breed animals that release methane at continually lower levels. If they can make it happen, the environment would benefit by limiting a major producer of greenhouse gases.

However, the team's intention isn't strictly...

Nvidia's new GPUs promise to take your laptop gaming to 1080p and beyond

Geforce-gtx-780m_large

Say hello to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M, the latest graphics chip to claim the title of "world's fastest notebook GPU." It's one of a quartet of new Kepler graphics cards that Nvidia is introducing today — the others being the GTX 760M, 765M and 770M — all of which are said to be at least 30 percent faster than their last-generation counterparts.

What that means in practical terms is that so long as your shiny new laptop has a GTX 700M-series GPU inside it, you should be able to game away quite happily at the popular 1920 x 1080 resolution. The performance differences between the four new models will mostly be felt in the amount of extra graphical frills you can enable at that resolution. That being said, the flagship 780M can be...

HTC reportedly cancels plans for full-size Windows RT tablet, but 7-inch tablets still on track

Windows-phone-buttons-stock_1020_large

HTC has reportedly canceled its plans to develop a full-size Windows RT tablet, citing weak demand for larger tablets, according to Bloomberg . High cost of development was also cited as a reason for canceling the planned 12-inch device. However, the company is still apparently on track to develop a 7-inch tablet running Microsoft's stripped down operating system, with a launch expected later this year. HTC is also said to be planning a new 7-inch Android tablet for the same time frame. Both tablets are expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

Bloomberg initially reported HTC's plans to develop Windows RT tablets back in December of last year, saying that the company had considered doing full-fledged Windows 8 versions,...

Sony Xperia Z to launch on US carrier in 'coming weeks'

Vv03-09_12-28-52d_large

Sony's selling an unlocked version of its Xperia ZL in the United States, but it hasn’t yet gotten a carrier deal for the flagship phones it launched at CES. That's about to change, Sony's Kaz Hirai and Phil Molyneux told reporters today at the D11 conference. "We will make an announcement about the Xperia Z with a carrier very shortly," said Hirai, with Molyneux later saying it would be within the coming weeks. Neither would reveal which carrier, but Sony has a long history with AT&T and the ZL already works on AT&T's LTE network, so that would be a natural fit.

Asked how Sony would differentiate the glass-backed waterproof Z in the hypercompetitive US market, Hirai conceded that the company has "more work to do," to stand out, but...

Treasury Department official says money laundering crackdown isn't part of an anti-Bitcoin campaign

Strength-in-numbers-btc-1020_large

In March, US Treasury department FinCEN — which handles enforcement of financial crimes — turned its eye towards the world of virtual currency. The bureau published guidelines for how the federal Bank Secrecy Act applied to both centralized and decentralized virtual money, most prominently Bitcoin. FinCEN's guidance was cautiously welcomed by some and decried by others, who opposed rules asking Bitcoin miners or trading floors to register with FinCEN and submit tax information. Now, the issue of how to regulate virtual currency is more pressing than ever: the Justice Department has accused online banking service Liberty Reserve of laundering $6 billion with its anonymous trading system.

Kaz Hirai says the PS4 is 'first and foremost' a game console, more features to be revealed

Still_large

Sony and Microsoft launched their next-gen consoles in very different ways: the Xbox One was pitched as a complete living room device, while the PS4 event was a nonstop series of game demos. That's important, Kaz Hirai told reporters at the D11 conference today. "The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers," he said. "If we miss that part, I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3."

Hirai did say that Sony would reveal more non-game PS4 functionality, though. "Providing other non-game...

HTC One with Stock Android hands-on

Vrg_6357_large

Google and HTC made a lot of dreams come true this morning when Android head Sundar Pichai announced a version of the HTC One with stock Android at the D11 conference. Google's Hugo Barra happened to have a stock One in his pocket, and he gave me a quick look. Just as with the stock Samsung GS4, it's exactly what you'd expect: both the hardware and software are familiar, but it's great to see them paired with support from Google and HTC. You'll still have to deal with HTC's weirdo button layout, though: the home button is on the right, not the middle, and it's a long press for Google Now and a double-tap for recent apps.

Beats won't put an icon in the menu bar

Of course, the big question with running stock on the One is how HTC's...

NHTSA calls on states to legalize self-driving car testing

Google-self-driving-car-4-stock-1024_large

In California, self-driving cars are street legal. Florida, and Nevada allow for self-driving autos to be tested on their roads, and Michigan may soon join the club. But so far, the 46 other states in the US have steered clear of automated automobiles — something the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hopes to change. On Thursday, NHTSA released a policy report calling on states to draft legislation that allows for the testing of self-driving cars.

Coursera bringing online courses to 64-campus SUNY university system

Shutterstock_138171806_large

Online education provider Coursera is partnering with 10 more university systems and schools, including The State University of New York (SUNY), to explore how massively open online courses (MOOCs) can be used on campus. Coursera says that the partnership will give professors the option of presenting MOOCs in a classroom environment, allowing them to see how the online material works alongside traditional teaching. MOOCs are still a young form of learning — they've been closely watched and frequently criticized — and even Coursera appears to regard this online integration as an experiment to see how the new medium can best be utilized.

With this announcement, Coursera now has 80 partnering schools and university systems. But...

FanTV revealed: is this the set-top box we’ve been waiting for?

Fanhattan_large

In June 2011, a Silicon Valley startup released a well received iOS app named Fanhattan to serve as a central place for finding streaming video. More recently, Fanhattan brought its service to the web. But it turns out the apps were something of a feint — for its entire existence the company has been secretly working on its own media streaming device, and after two years Fanhattan is showing it to the world.

Today on stage at the D11 conference, Fanhattan co-founder and CEO Gilles BianRosa is unveiling FanTV, an Yves Behar-designed entertainment system that combines the functions of cable set-top boxes and streaming devices like Apple TV and Roku. The device, which does not have a price or a ship date beyond "later this year," will...

Mission to Mars would blast astronauts with harmful levels of radiation, study finds

Curiosity-rover-heat-shield-hi-res_large

Future human astronauts traveling to Mars would face risks beyond each other's changing moods in cramped quarters. They would also get blasted with extremely high, harmful doses of space radiation, well beyond the lifetime acceptable limits currently used by NASA, according to a new study of data collected by the agency's Mars Curiosity rover on its voyage to Mars. "Previously, there have not been direct measurements of the dose rate in deep space by shielded instruments," said Cary Zeitlin, a scientist at the Southwest Research Institute and the lead author of the study published tomorrow in the journal Science. In other words, even the Curiosity spacecraft's shields — the most advanced built yet for interplanetary travel — could...

Tesla improves Supercharger network to decrease charge times, details ambitious expansion

Ib3c0927_large

In addition to widening the reach of its Supercharger network (as CEO Elon Musk outlined last night), Tesla also plans to notch up the amount of power each Supercharger station is capable of producing. During a conference call this afternoon, the company said it's been working to improve the technology behind the Superchargers to cut down on the amount of charging time required to get Model S drivers back on the road. Specifically, Tesla says its latest enhancements allow the Model S to be charged at 120 kilowatts — up from 90 kilowatts. But what does that mean for owners? Approximately three hours of driving time can be replenished in just 20 minutes once the boosted Superchargers — now in beta — become commonplace throughout the...

Tumblr launches first in-stream sponsored posts on web following mobile rollout

Tumblr_desktop_ad_large

Just over one month ago, Tumblr introduced its first in-stream mobile ads, and today, it's bringing the same ads to its website. The "sponsored posts," as they're called, often take the form of Tumblr-friendly images like GIFs of a scene from The Great Gatsby, or an animation of a GE jet engine. The sponsored posts, denoted by animated dollar signs ($) in their top-right corners, have already racked up 10 million likes and reblogs on mobile thus far, Tumblr says. "We have been overwhelmed by the incredibly positive response to our advertising approach- from both Tumblr users and our partners," says Lee Brown, Tumblr's Global Head of Sales. "The engagement rates on the Tumblr Radar and Sponsored Mobile Posts have been spectacular and we...
