Researchers discover new bomb-detecting radar method inspired by dolphins

Researchers have discovered a new radar technique that could be used to find a improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in a pile of trash on the road, and the finding was inspired from an unlikely source: dolphins. The technology could also be used to find buried earthquake victims, animals marked with tags, or tiny surveillance devices hidden in walls.

But how do dolphins come into play? The first author of the new research, Timothy Leighton of the University of Southampton, told New Scientist that he was watching a video that showed how dolphins blew bubbles to herd groups of fish, and he wondered how the dolphins could use their sonar abilities to track the fish with all of that "noise" around.
