US restricts government purchases of Chinese IT, citing concerns over security

The US Congress this week passed a new provision that requires government agencies to conduct cybersecurity assessments before purchasing IT equipment from Chinese manufacturers. The provision, included as part of a larger spending bill signed by President Obama, forces NASA, the Department of Commerce, and the Department of Justice to receive formal approval from federal law enforcement before procuring technology systems from China. The law is designed to protect the government from Chinese cyberattacks, though as Reuters reports, it could add extra strain to already tense relations between Beijing and Washington.
